Frequently asked questions
Nine questions that decide whether this tool is right for you. The answers are the same text that search engines see, so nothing is quietly different behind the scenes.
Does my book get uploaded anywhere?
No. The EPUB is read by your browser, edited in memory and written back to a download on your device. There is no server component, no account and no analytics. After the page has loaded, the editor works with the network switched off, which is the simplest way to verify it.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The editor is built mobile-first: the form fits a 360-pixel screen, the touch targets are at least 44 pixels tall, and the file picker uses the normal mobile file dialog. That is the main reason this tool exists instead of telling you to install a desktop application.
Will my e-reader show the series after I edit it?
It depends on the device. EpubMeta writes the series name and index in both the EPUB 3 form (belongs-to-collection with group-position) and the calibre form (calibre:series and calibre:series_index), which is what most tools and many reading systems look for. Kobo models read series information for sideloaded books in many firmware versions; Kindle reading systems generally ignore the series metadata inside a sideloaded EPUB, because their series grouping is built from store data. A rescan or re-import on the device is often needed either way.
Can it open a DRM-protected book?
No. If META-INF/encryption.xml shows that a book’s content is encrypted, EpubMeta refuses to open it and says so plainly. It will never remove DRM. Books that only obfuscate their embedded fonts are a different case: that is not DRM, the text is not encrypted, and editing the metadata is safe.
Which files can I edit?
EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 files with the .epub extension. Not MOBI, AZW3, PDF, or anything that is not an EPUB. The file needs to be a readable ZIP archive with a META-INF/container.xml pointing at a package document.
Is this as strict as epubcheck?
No, and it never claims to be. The built-in checks are a structural subset: the package document parses, spine references match the manifest, referenced files exist in the archive, and mimetype ordering is correct. For a full conformance pass, run the result through epubcheck. Many books that are perfectly readable fail epubcheck on details that predate the book.
What happens to the rest of the book?
Every other file is copied through unchanged, and the tool proves it: after saving, it re-opens the new archive and checks that each original entry is still there, byte for byte, before the download starts. If any check fails, the download is blocked. Even so, keep your original file — that is true of any tool that writes to a book.
What does it cost?
Nothing. There is no account, no sign-in and no payment. The editor is a static page, so it costs almost nothing to run, and the pages load no ads or trackers today.
I found a bug, or a book it cannot open. What now?
Email the contact address with the browser you used, the device width if it is a layout problem, and a short description of what happened. If a book is refused, say so — refusals are logged as gaps to fix, not hidden. Do not send the book itself unless you own the rights to share it.
