About EpubMeta
One job: fix the metadata of one EPUB, from the device you are holding, without sending the book anywhere.
Why this exists
The people who need series metadata fixed are usually not at a desk. They are holding a phone, having just sideloaded a book that shows up as “Book 1” of nothing. The classic tools for the job are excellent and they are desktop applications. The web tools tend to ask you to upload your library to a server first. Neither is what this situation calls for, so this is a third option: a page that edits the book in the browser and never uploads it.
How it is built
A static site with one script. The archive is opened with a small ZIP library, the package document is parsed with the browser’s own XML parser, the edits are applied to the document tree, and the book is rebuilt with mimetype first and stored uncompressed. The saved bytes are re-opened and re-read before the download starts.
Where it fits
There is no shortage of tools around EPUB files. Here is an honest, checkable comparison of where each one runs — follow the links and see for yourself.
| Tool | Where the file goes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Calibre | Stays on your computer | Desktop application with a full metadata editor. The strongest tool for the job on a computer. (Download page checked 2026-10-22.) |
| Sigil | Stays on your computer | Desktop EPUB editor, oriented at editing the book’s content and structure. (Project page checked 2026-10-22.) |
| GroupDocs EPUB metadata editor | Uploaded to their servers | Free tier of a commercial document service. Its own page says files are processed on their servers and offers 3 files per day. (Checked 2026-10-22.) |
| EpubMeta | Stays in your browser tab | Mobile-first, series metadata written in both encodings, DRM refused, no accounts. |
Trademarks and tool names belong to their owners. If any statement above is out of date, write in and it gets corrected — the date next to each row is the date it was checked.
What it is honest about
- It is not a replacement for Calibre on a desktop, and it is not epubcheck.
- It refuses DRM-protected books instead of pretending to support them.
- It writes both series encodings because devices disagree about which one to read.
